Motivation is difficult in general and is that much more difficult when we are experiencing depression.  We may know what to do to improve our mood and we know which coping skills to use but we just don\'t have the energy or motivation to do them.  Lack of motivation and lack of energy are two of the main symptoms of depression. So how do we increase our motivation to engage in our coping skills to overcome depression?  1) Make your goals attainable. Set small goals depending on your current level of motivation to help improve your mood. Setting small goals allows us to celebrate those small successes and not burn out when trying to improve our mood and overcome depression.  2) Don\'t overthink it, \""Just do it!\"" If we start thinking about our coping skills and improving our mood, we will begin to overthink it and talk ourselves out of it. Practice the Nike saying and \""Just do it!\"". Do whatever you have planned and what you know will help to improve your mood and overcome depression.  3) Make your coping skills a routine. In a previous video we talked about coping skills to manage depression and anxiety and we mentioned making your coping skills a routine. If there is a routine and we are used to using those coping skills, then we can rely on them that much more. Practice your coping skills regularly so when you need them, they are that much more effective for you.
