The Wedding Banquet - A Video Essay on Ang Lee's Picture Perfect Masterpiece
05:17 Nov 1, 2020
This video essay describes the role of photography in Ang Lee's 1993 film, The Wedding Banquet. This video reviews the plot of the film itself and provides a way to understand its meaning. I’d like to credit Professor Li for her lecture on this topic on March 30th of 2020. I’d also like to mention that the term “hidden transcript” is popularized by a renowned scholar named James Scott in his 1992 book, “Domination and the Arts of Resistance.” Another inspiration is the work of Grant McCraken in his analysis of “homeyness” and the use of photography in North American homes. I do not claim to have rights to the film itself, which I use pieces of in this video.
